Landlord - 'Our parents moved into this home in 1956'

Today we look at our next landlord that has shared their reasons for letting their property. We don't think we will have any client that has had such a long relationship with a property. Our clients journey starts in 1956..........

“Our Parents moved into the house in around 1956, when I was 3 years old. The house was a new build on a council estate, therefore my parents paid rent to the local council.

In 1958 my brother was born in the house, thus the house became a true family home and we, as kids, grew up there.
In the 1980’s, under the government’s incentive scheme of this period, my parents bought the house from the council. By this time my brother and I had already moved out and bought our own homes.
Sadly, our father passed away in 1997 and our mother remained in the house until she passed away in 2011.
My brother and I inherited the house in as bequeathed in our mothers will and, once probate had been settled, we discussed the best course of action to take with the house; sell or rent.
We concluded that neither of us were in a desperate need of the proceeds of a sale and that rental would maintain a capital in the building and provide us with a separate income (retirement was not too far in the future for either of us). Money sitting in the bank would not be of benefit and there was potential growth in the value of the property.
If need be, we could always sell if letting did not work out, or at a later date if either of us had the requirement too.
So, since 2012 we have rented, with a few short breaks between tenants, thus maintaining a fairly consistent income.
Occasionally there have been capital outlays with respect to repair and maintenance of the property or its fixtures, but this happens with any property, so is to be expected.
Generally, the tenants we have had have all been pretty good and we have always tried to make a little rapport with them, some more than others, as we feel this makes for a better landlord/tenant relationship.”

What a remarkable story this is and we are delighted the brothers have shared it. We began renting this property in 2017, the home has always been let to local families.

This property wasn't purchased as an 'investment', this was their home. Having been owned by the same family for over 60 years and giving other families to the chance to enjoy this home is wonderful.

When you decide to sell your family home, the general advice is to de-personalise it. But this is wishy-washy at best, so we have compiled a step-by-step guide to get your property ready for sale.
